Simple Heating TipsThe winter holiday season is often referred to as “the most wonderful time of the year” and it’s easy to see why. Between spending time with the ones you love, finding the perfect gift, and dashing through the snow, the holiday season is jam packed with fun times. Unfortunately, it can also wreak havoc on your home’s heating system if you’re not careful.

Use these hassle free holiday heating tips to keep your family comfortable all season.

Keep your home dust free

Dusting your home is great way to prepare your space for the holiday season, whether you’re having guests over, heading over to Grandma’s house, or taking a winter vacation. Over time, dust, allergens, and debris can accumulate in your home’s air and spread throughout your HVAC system’s ductwork. This can make your family and your guests’ allergies and asthma worse!

Check your air filter and replace it if necessary

Replacing your air filter is a simple, easy, and very effective way to improve your home’s air quality. During heating season, your air filter should be changed or at least inspected about every 4 to 6 weeks as a general rule of thumb. Staying on top of changing your air filter can also lead to energy and cost savings. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, changing your air filter can improve your HVAC system’s efficiency anywhere from 5% to 15%!

Adjust your thermostat accordingly

Whether you’re at home cooking and baking up a storm or heading out for the holidays, it’s important to turn your heat down by a notch or two. Cooking, baking, and even having guests over will naturally create a warmer environment and reduces the need for a higher temperature setting. Not only will this simple measure save you a little money, but it will also help to keep everyone comfortable! If you’re going away for an extended period of time (more than a day or two), set your thermostat to at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting. If you heat with an electric heat pump, when you return raise your temperature back up a few degrees at a time to prevent the auxiliary heat from coming on or don’t set it back to far from your normal set temperature.

Keep flammable items in safe areas

While this may seem pretty obvious, things always seem to get a little hectic during the holidays! Be sure to always keep flammable objects such as blankets, wrapping paper, and electrical decorations away from heating systems (including personal space heaters) to avoid fire hazards.

Stay on top of your HVAC Maintenance

Regular HVAC system maintenance and inspections are always recommended. If you haven’t schedule an appointment in a while, now is a great time. Regular tune-ups can address minor issues before they become major problems, and can keep your home, family, and guests safe.
